Here the elements of the search form are briefly described. If you still have problems while using the search form or if you encounter bugs, please write to M. Nentwich in order to get help, the bugs fixed, or the help pages amended.
The Elements of the Search Form:
| Search for | Words to Search for | Boolean Linking of Search Words | Case | Year-No. | Submit Query | Reset Form | List of Keywords |
To fill in the form, you simply use your mouse to put cursor in the respective field and start writing. The menu options of the fields "Search For", "Boolean Linking of Search Words" and "Case" are selected by clicking with your mouse on the the small button with the arrow (then you will see the menu) and then clicking on the option you want to chose.
You have to fill in at least one field, otherwise the search engine will report back to you with an error message.
There are three options to fill in the form: You may
In this menu you chose in which index of the
archive to search. You have the following search options:
The search in these indices can be combined with the limitation of the search to a specific time span (see below)!
Here you insert the search string. It does not have to be an entire word; any set of letters is possible; therefore it is not necessary to truncate with * or ?.
If you insert more than one word (search string), just separate them with a blank, do not use and or or or other similar expressions between words! The linking of the search strings is ruled by the next option (boolean linking).
If this field remains empty, the search engine will search for year-number combinations only!
Here you decide whether it should be relevant if the words inserted by
you are in upper or lower case.
Example: you insert the word
"Member". If you chose the option "non-sensitive", the search will find
documents in which the following words are present: "Member States", "members",
"membership" etc. With the option "sensitive" only the first word would be
found.
It is important that you insert in the two fields "from" and "to" year-number combinations only according to the fixed format with eight digits, e.g. 1996-001 - otherwise you will get an error message. The year has to be in four digit format; the number has to have three digits which means that you have to fill in nulls towards the left; between year and number you need a dash without blanks.
Example: If you want to search for all articles of a certain year, insert in the "from" field e.g. 1997-001 and in the "to" field 1997-999.
When you have finished completing the search form, click with the mouse on this button in order to submit your query to the server. Shortly afterwards, you will get the results where all articles found are marked as a WWW link so that you can jump directly to them.
By clicking on this button, you can go back to the empty form at any time, i.e. deleting all fields and switching back to the default form ("Author", "non-sensitive", "AND").
All keywords ever attributed to
articles can be found in this list which is always kept up-to-date. If you want
you can copy them directly into the search form: you have to mark the
respective word in the list with your mouse, then you copy it with the copy
function of your browser on the clipboard; then you click the "Back" button in
order to get back to either the English or German search form; finally you
insert the word with the "insert" function of your browser from the clipboard
into the field "Words to Search for".
The list of keywords contains English words only because no German keywords are attributed. If you want to search for German keywords, you may search in the "Abstracts" index: most probably some German keywords will be found there.
Although the
are an online publication and may be read on the screen, it might well be that
you want to print out an interesting article in order to save your eyes. In
principle this is possible - we would like to give you some hints, however, so
that you will be satisfied with your print-out:
There are three differenct options in order to print
arrticles:
This is the most convenient way to print papers of the
. However, you will have to install once a so-called plug-in for
your browser, namely the Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is a freely
available software which enables you to read and print files in a specific
format (with the extension *.pdf) - whatever your platform.
When you first try to download such a PDF file by clicking on "PDF" in
the respective line of an article in the
, your browser will - if Acrobat Reader is not installed yet - make
you aware of this fact and propose to guide you to the homepage of Adobe (for
Netscape just click on "More Info..."). There you can download and install this
software (please follow the guidelines given there). You may also wish to do it
right now by following this link:
If Acrobat Reader is installed, a button panel will be inserted
in the large text window of the
after you have clicked on "PDF" for a paper; furthermore, the respective
article will show up in the same window (almost in the same format as you would
see it in the print preview of your browser). By clicking on the print symbol
(far left in the button panel) the paper will be printed on your standard
printer (before that you may wish to adjust the general printing options, e.g.
which pages you want to print).
In contrast to variant 1 (see above) the PDF file already consists of the abstract, the full text and, in case, of the tables and graphs.
It is not possible to change a PDF file, to copy or otherwise use parts of the text or of graphs. Only printing and reading is possible. Thus the copyright of the authors is well protected.
If you use a postscript printer ("postscript" is a sort of Esperanto in the world of printer driver languages) you may chose this variant where no plug-in has to be installed.
As soon as you click on "Postscript" in the respective line of the list
of articles, your browser will pop up a window giving you two choices,
depending on whether you have a programme installed which reads postscript
files: either you save the file on your hard drive or disc, or you open it. The
latter is only workable if you have that programme.
But it is not necessary
to open the file; just follow these three steps:
That's it! The chosen
paper should arrive in your printer.
In some cases, the PS files may be rather large (above 1MB). If
indicated with 'PS-ZIP' in the respective line in
either the 'current issue' page or in the 'archive' listing, you may wish to
download the zipped file which is much smaller. It is in
Winzip® format. Save it to your disc and open it with your
zip utility: the respective postscript will be unzipped. Then proced as
indicated above.
From an Apple, printing of postscript files is even more simple:
The WWW pages of the
are optimized for Netscape Version 3.0 or above. This means that there might be
problems with the graphical presentation when using lower versions or other
browsers. In particular the colours (colour of fonts and background colour) may
be very different.
For users of browsers that do not support frames (e.g. Cello, Mosaic)
there is a version of the
without frames which is, naturally, less comforatble to navigate.
Furthermore the size and shape of the frames on the screen depends very much on the size of your screen, the size of the window of your browser, and of the individual settings regarding font type and size.
On the pages of the
we renounced deliberatly using inline images because the
are a scientific medium in the first place and not a coloured magazine.
Furthermore, purely text based WWW pages are much faster to download.
We advise you to download the latest version of Netscape to optimize the joy of reading. Here is the downloading sites:
Nevertheless we would be most grateful if you report to us any ugly defects of the screen presentation so that we can try to fix them. Please respond via email to mnent@oeaw.ac.at. Many thanks in advance!
Commenting
papers is very easy: just click on the "comment!"
link on either the abstract or the full text page of a paper or on the
respective link on on the current issue page. The form consists of 5 fields.
Please note that some of them are mandatory, i.e. if not filled in, your
submission will not be processed and produce an error message:
After completion of the form, please click on the SEND COMMENT button. Your comment will be sent automatically to the author(s) as well as to the editor by email. If you agreed to the publication, the editorial board will check your comment and put it with a certain time lag on the respective comment page.
